Peter Merts captures a lot of quiet photographs—even this one, though I would hardly think of the surf as quiet. This photograph in particular is one of my favorites of his simply because it has a surreal quality. I am not a huge fan of landscape photography, but most of his images have a human addition that gives the scenery something more, something abnormal, whether that be a random wall or a part of a stone face.
